Working Duties Expected Betting shop managers and cashiers duties vary from taking and paying out bets to sweeping the shop floors, from making sure the marketing around the shop is up to date to making their customers teas. You need to be numerate and able to work under pressure at times, you need to be flexible and be able to deliver top quality customer service and have the ability to solve any queries that may come your way.

Hours and Environment Betting shops have long moved on from opening at 1015am Monday to Friday, 1000am on a Saturday, closing at 5pm in the evenings and being closed on a Sunday. Nowadays, it is anything from 800am until 1000pm and Sunday trading as well. The business is a fast paced 7 days a week business and the shops are on the whole modern with state of the art betting systems. The hours of trading may be long but you can be sure no two days in a betting shop are the same.

Skills and Interests You need to be able to work as a team, be numerate, flexible and good with people. Having any interests in any sports is an advantage.

Entry Academic qualifications are not generally required to become a betting shop manager or cashier, but employees must be at least 18 years of age. Some employers may include basic arithmetic tests as part of their recruitment procedure. It is useful to have had prior experience of dealing with customers or handling money but not essential.

Training New entrants in most cases receive in shop training from experienced managers and cashiers. This will usually cover areas such as counter operations, cash handling, customer service, security along with company policy. Larger bookmakers also conduct training at regional training centres.

Opportunities Having completed your training period you will be constantly learning from other members of the shop team and your progress will come down to your performance and opportunities that may arise.

Annual Income Income will vary from company to company.

Working in a high street betting shop can be a fun and rewarding occupation, especially if your interested in sports. Typically employers are looking for applicants with good customer service skills, numeracy and a positive attitude.
